Ian Pont
Coaching Career:
Ian Pont launched Mavericks Cricket Institute (MCI) in 1993 using Advanced Biomechanics Speed & Accuracy Training methods (ABSAT). Ian’s continued development of these training drills and skills, has led him to become one of the top bowling coaches for the development of club, county and international players.
Ian is author of The Fast Bowler’s Bible and Coaching Youth Cricket , which is recommended reading by the ECBCA. Ian is also qualified to UKCC ECB Level 3 Head Coach, which enables him to coach batting, spin, medium/pace bowling and fielding.
As Head Coach to the Dhaka Gladiators, Ian led the team to victory at the inaugural 2012 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The team featured world-class players like Shahid Afridi and Keiron Pollard. Ian is also currently coaching and consulting for Ranji Trophy team, Haryana CA in India, working with their first team and scouting for fresh talent for a new coaching academy.
During 2010/2011 as Bowling Coach to Bangladesh, Ian covered 2 ODI Series and the ICC World Cup 2011. Bangladesh went on to win two back-to-back ODI’s Series, their highest achievement to date.
Previous coaching entailed 3 years as a Specialist Fast Bowling Coach at Northamptonshire CCC, 3 years as Bowling Coach at Essex CCC, as well as Assistant Head Coach to The Netherlands in preparation for 2007 ICC World Cup, WI.
Playing Career:
Starting his young cricket career as England U19 Batsman, Ian signed professionally as an Opening Batsman with Nottinghamshire CCC before joining Essex CCC as a Pace Bowler, in addition to playing as an overseas cricketer for South African side Natal.
After throwing the second longest recorded throw of all time – a mammoth 138 yards (126.18m) or 414 feet , Ian had professional baseball trials as a pitcher with 6 Major League Teams in 1987. Clocking speeds around 100 mph, Ian is the only modern professional cricketer to play in a professional baseball match.
Cricket Related:
As Sales & Marketing Director, in 1992 Hogger Sports, secured the contract to supply World Cup coloured cricket clothing. The following year, Ian helped negotiate the contract for coloured cricket clothing in the AXA Equity & Law League and cricket played in colour was born in the UK.
With BBC media training Ian hosted his own radio show ‘Ian Pont’s Sporting Sunday’ for 3 cricket seasons, covering Essex CCC games.
